" All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses " - Friedrich Nietzsche
Are you midway through a writing project, want to make it more compelling but not quite sure how to? Are you a published author but stuck and uninspired
with your next piece? Then join us! Come to your senses and cocoon in the beautiful venue and surrounds in Brunswick Heads, with Shelley and a
small group (max 8) of fellow writers.
Find your own descriptions; your unique writing voice so you can convey the observed world through all your senses in fresh and compelling ways. Shape
your stories so they’re alive and rich and move your readers and allow them, too, to see things anew.
Each day at the retreat, you’ll:
- write a piece so charged with sensory detail it captivates your readers
- create new and exciting pieces of writing or finesse something you’ve “prepared earlier”
- find new ways to explore story and write with authenticity and depth
- spend free time making progress on your writing or enjoying an afternoon siesta or wandering, wondering and finding inspiration for your stories.
We’ll look at the basics of editing. You’ll not only create a powerful story but also learn vital techniques for shaping and finessing future writing.
We’ve chosen Brunswick Heads for 'Come to your Senses' — the small, unspoilt coastal village on the NSW north coast, situated at the mouth of the Brunswick River.
Here, you’ll have writing sessions in the living room of The Create Escape HQ, lunch at the venue and have time to revel in the delights of the nearby picturesque village.
At the 'Come to your Senses' you'll –
- Write, discuss, learn, write, write...
- Enjoy cooked lunches in the dining area that will be inspired by the senses you are writing about
- Have time to walk along the river or by the ocean; invite your writing muses to come and sit with you on the riverbank or beach, breathe fresh invigorating air and dream up more stories

- Humans may be able to smell over 1 trillion scents, according to researchers. They do this with the olfactory cleft, which is found on the roof of the nasal cavity, next to the "smelling" part of the brain, the olfactory bulb and fossa. — New England Journal of Medicine: ‘The Role of PIEZO2 in Human Mechanosensation’
- Touch isn't just a sense used to interact with the world; it also seems to be very important to a human's well-being. A pat on the back, a caress of the arm are everyday, incidental gestures that we usually take for granted, thanks to our amazingly dexterous hands. But after years spent immersed in the science of touch, researchers are telling us they are our primary language of compassion, and a primary means for spreading compassion.— Dacher Keltner, ‘Hands on Research: The Science of Touch’, www.greatergood.berkeley.edu
- The sense of taste aided in human evolution, according to the National Library of Medicine, USA, because taste helped people test the food they ate. A bitter or sour taste indicated that a plant might be poisonous or rotten. Something salty or sweet, however, often meant the food was rich in nutrients.

Testimonial
" Another stunning day at the retreat... Such a great experience to have the time, space and guidance to really get into the guts of my manuscript! It's not nearly as hard as I thought. Writing, editing, delicious food, birds, a roaring log fire, tranquility, wonderful people and conversation and words, words, words. Thank you... " - Helen McLennan
"Appealing to the five senses is the feature that will always set writing apart from the visual media. A good writer will tell us what the world smells like, what the textures are, what the sounds are, what the light looks like, what the weather is." Janet Fitch
